This position works 8:15 AM - 11:45 A.M. Monday through Thursday 3.5 hours per day at Vandover Early Childhood Center as a nurse shadow and a 190 day school calendar.  Total hours of work 14 hours per week and salary will be based on that total hours of work.  

 

The start date is August 19, 2022.

POSITION SUMMARY:   Facilitates inclusion of medically fragile children into an integrated educational setting.

 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

  1. Works with medically fragile students in the classroom to enable them to participate in an educational setting with their peers.
  2. Will assess and evaluate the total health and developmental status of students through nursing assessments and evaluation techniques.
  3. Performs medical treatments as prescribed by student’s physicians.
  4. Alerts classroom staff of physical or health conditions which impact the learning process of students.
  5. Participates in classroom planning, multidisciplinary re-evaluations, and individual educational plan teams (IEP) for students.
  6. Acts as a liaison between medical care providers, families and school personnel regarding the students with which they work.
  7. Becomes familiar with teaching procedures used by the teacher and therapists, materials and equipment available and the special education process.
  8. Provides first aid in emergencies and sudden illnesses.
  9. Identifies and recommends exclusion of students and staff in the early state of communicable diseases, including COVID-19.
  10. Serves as a resource for staff regarding medical information.
  11. Administers medications in accordance with District policy.
  12. Assures that students’ health records are current and accurate.
  13. Assists with students in classrooms or buildings other than the one assigned, if necessary.
  14. Participates in nursing and preschool workshops, inservice training and parent conferences when appropriate.
  15. Performs other duties as assigned by the Program Nurse, Early Childhood Director and the Rockwood Nurse Supervisor.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  1. Possesses knowledge of procedures to support the physical and medical needs of the students.
  2. Demonstrates effective communication.
  3. Ability to routinely lift light to moderate weight (1-25 pounds) and to assist with lifting a child’s weight.
  4. Ability to bend, twist, stoop or crouch.
  5. Ability to accompany students on bus as needed.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS: 

  1. Must be a graduate of an accredited nursing program. BSN required.
  2. Must possess a valid Registered Nurse License issued by the State Board of Nursing, State of Missouri.  
  3. Prefer experience with skills that have application to school nursing.
  4. Pediatric nursing and special needs care experience preferred. 
  5. Prefer experience pediatric/community health/psych.
  6. Certification in CPR including AED.
  7. Must possess basic computer skills. Competency in Word and with internet based documentation system preferred.

EQUIPMENT USED: 

  • Standard office equipment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: 

  • Ability to work in a variety of locations, travel throughout the District, work non-traditional hours which may include evenings and weekends and meet the physical demands of handling a variety of student needs.
  • While performing duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk, hear, walk, stand and reach.
